May 31, 2018

Time does fly when you’re having so much fun! And come to think of it, a few more days, we’ll be welcoming the month of June and summer vacation is already over. It’s that time of the year where kids start to open their books and mommies are preparing for their kid’s schooling. Well, what better way to do your back-to-school shopping spree than spending it with National Book Store, right?
Being a mother of three boys, I spend a lot of time organizing and preparing for their everyday needs. Especially when it comes to their education. Last May 15, 2018, I was invited at National Book Store located at SM North EDSA to do my annual back-to-school shopping. I was excited to go over the new items that they have in store, as those brings back memories of when I was shopping for my own school things with my Mom. Here are some of the finds that I have checked out that you can also buy for your kid’s school needs:
1.    Backpack to School
This backpack is made of plastic and nylon materials, which is very efficient during rainy seasons. This bag has everything that a student needs for their first day of school. It has notebooks, pencils, ball pen, envelope, crayons, scissors and many more. You can choose from bags for grades 1 to 3 and bags for grades 4 to 6, costing 329 pesos and 399 pesos, respectively.

2.    Grab and Go Packs
Grab and Go packs are pouches that includes specific school materials for students from Grades 1 to 3 and 4 to 6, these pouches help organize your kid’s materials. For mommies out there, who likes quick and easy shopping like me, I personally recommend their Grab and Go Pack drawing set and writing set. These sets are perfect for you since it already has what you need for drawing and writing.  Grab and Go packs prices start at 145 pesos. This pack is very convenient for shoppers that hasn’t much time, as you can just select what set you need.
3.    Best Buy Items
Best Buy offers quality items that are budget friendly. If you’re a mom of more than one, like me, and you’re on a budget, I suggest that you get Best Buy items. They have pad papers, notebooks, pencils, erasers, glue, scissors, bond papers and many more. You will not only be able to save but you’ll also get good quality material.

Addition to items that I was able to find at National Book Store is Pilot’s Buy 4 Get 1 Free Ball Pen, that has different colors of inks, this includes black, blue, red, green and violet, my favorite color! I also got them a Correction tape, so they can use it for any mistakes that they might make when writing, just like how we make mistakes in our lives, but of course we can always do something to make it right. Lastly, I included First Aid Kits in my shopping cart. Inside the kit, you will find a whistle, a flashlight and other emergency gears. This will be very useful in case something bad (knock on wood!) happens. I was only able to buy some of my kids’ school necessities since I do not have the complete list of what other materials they will need. Maybe we’ll just have to wait until their teachers ask for school essentials, besides, there are other ways to shop at National Book Store. If you need any help with what to buy for your back-to-school haul, you can check out my video posted on my Facebook page. This video is also featured by the National Book Store’s Facebook page.

If you’re a very busy mom and you seem to have limited time on your hands, National Book Store offers online shopping and shopping over the phone as well. You can shop anytime you can and still do all your chores or work. You can visit www.nationalbookstore.com if you choose to shop online. You can also dial 8888-627, for Manila area, you can go over your back to school shopping with one of their customer service representatives. Shopping at National Book Store really is at the tip of your fingers!
It’s not a secret that not everyone has the privilege to afford school materials. National Book Store has a solution for that. They have campaigns that aims to help children nationwide, go to school with slippers on their feet and notebook and pencil for their lessons. We can contribute to this campaign by donating Project Aral Kits. One kit can help one student.

If you’re not yet done with your back to school shopping, or you have not yet started, National Book Store is launching a Grand Back to School Fair at the TriNoma Activity Center, from May 25 to 27, 2018, and from June 1 to 3, 2018 at the Glorietta Activity Center. Registration starts at 10 AM onwards. Admission is Free, so don’t miss this opportunity! You can get a free tote bag with every 1,000 Peso worth of purchases. A drawstring bag for 99 pesos for every 300 Peso worth of purchases, a lunch bag for 75 pesos with every 500 Peso worth of purchase of any participating items.
National Book Store does not only give us the joy of shopping for back to school essentials, with their wide range of selections, from school supplies to uniforms, shoes and bags, and quality items that will meet your budget, they also give back to those who are less fortunate. As a child, perhaps you had the unfortunate experience of contracting head lice. It may be embarrassing to admit but I did have lice when I was a child. Adults will often say that "Liliparin na daw ako ng kuto or may bahay na sila nabuo sa ulo ko." Lice infestations can be extremely stressful and disrupting.

Pediculosis presents a negative impact on children’s self- confidence.  It is one of the causes of absenteeism, loss of concentration, attentiveness and poor academic performance.

That is why it is imperative that we treat them right away and make our kids enjoy school without the worry of lice.

What are lice?

Head lice are tiny insects that develop in three stages: from nit to nymph to full-blown louse.

How can I get lice?
The primary way you can get head lice is when your head comes in direct contact with the head of an infested individual. Head-to-head contact like that doesn't guarantee that the infestation will spread, but it gives lice the best opportunity to move from the hair of the infested person to your hair.

What are the symptoms of head lice?

  • Itchiness- One of the biggest symptoms of head lice is, obviously, an itchy scalp. Of course, there are many other things that can cause itchiness, such as dandruff, allergies, or just dry scalp from the changing weather. There’s no need to jump to conclusions, but if your child is scratching their head more often and complaining of an itchy or tingly scalp, you may want to check for lice.
  • Sores and Scabbing- Kids tend to scratch harder than necessary when they have an itch, and they can end up injuring themselves in the process. In the case of head lice, children may even scratch throughout the night without realizing it. If you suspect head lice, check your child’s scalp and hairline for sore spots, scratch marks or scabs that have been caused by excess scratching.
  • Loss of Sleep- The itchiness caused by lice can be persistent, and the constant discomfort will probably disrupt your child’s sleep schedule. If your child has a hard time getting asleep or staying asleep due to itching, there’s a good chance that head lice are to blame.
  • Irritability- If your child has head lice, they’ll probably be more irritable than usual, and it’s no wonder why. Not only are they feeling itchy and uncomfortable, but they aren’t getting enough sleep either – and that’s enough to put anybody in a bad mood.

What is the treatment for lice?

When it comes to lice treatment, there is Permethrin (Kwell) Shampoo, the medicated shampoo for the treatment of head lice and their eggs (kuto at lisa) and prevention for those at risk.

How to use Permethrin (Kwell) Shampoo:
1. Wet the Hair
2. Shake the bottle/open the sachet. Place an ample amount of Permethrin (Kwell) shampoo and lather it in the hair thoroughly. Make sure that all parts of the head, hair and scalp and even the back of the ears and neck are treated.
3. Leave for 10 minutes and wash thoroughly after.
4. Dry the hair by using a towel.

If other members of the family have lice, treat them as well with Permethrin (Kwell) to avoid the spread of lice.

Permethrin (Kwell) also is more economical. Use it once to get rid of lice then repeat after 7 days to make sure that no nits have been left and that’s it. No need to do maintenance washes.

There’s no guaranteed way to avoid head lice. Teach your kids not to share brushes or hats, but remember that most cases come from simple close contact – hugging their friends, sitting close together, sleepovers and the like. There are products that claim to repel lice using essential oils; some suggest using hair gel at the roots; however, none of these claims has evidence to support the effectiveness.

Permethrin (Kwell) for head lice & scabies is manufactured by  Aspen Philippines, a subsidiary of Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Limited, Africa’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturer and the biggest listed pharmaceutical group in the healthcare sector of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Aspen Philippines aims to make high-quality branded medicines available to Filipino patients at affordable cost.

One of Aspen’s healthcare programs called “Kwella sa Es-Kwella at Komunidad”  was established in 2013 as a response to the Dept. of Education’s (DepEd) need for information campaign on proper hygiene and treatment for pediculosis (head lice). For the past 4 years, Aspen Philippines has conducted series of educational tours.  In 2017, they have visited 630 schools, participated by about 12,000 students, teachers, school staff and parents.

In 2015, Aspen Philippines was awarded by Aspen Asia the Asia’s Community Involvement Award for our delousing activity of 150 children in Barangay Barangka, Mandaluyong City. Permethrin (Kwell) is the Number One head lice treatment certified by IMS Health.

The above program was institutionalized by Aspen Philippines as a result of the 2012 DepEd & University of the Philippines (UP) statistics which revealed that pediculosis (head lice) is ranked as the 2nd most common ailment among public school children aged 7-12 years old.  Based on DepEd data, almost 9M or 84% of students are afflicted with head lice.

It was a fulfilling and memorable experience to be a part of the NOVUHAIR Philippines at the Fanny Serrano Salon & Boutique located at 32 Scout Borromeo St., Brgy. South Triangle Tomas Morato, Quezon City 1103. I was able to meet one of the country’s reputed and finest celebrity stylist, fashion designer and endorser, Fanny Serrano.

As I expected, he was an epitome of quality and outstanding service. His dedication to provide exemplary beauty treatment services was awe-inspiring especially for women like me. He is indeed a cut above others in the realm of beauty treatment and maintenance for providing many different solutions in our concerns regarding health and looks.

My first look inside his salon was marvelous!  I got to try their impressive yet awareness-raising Hair and Scalp Analysis. I was surprised that I had considerable dandruff flakes in my scalp. Merely looking at it really isn’t enough to say your dandruff-free and you’re scalp is healthy.

What we need is to have professional care and treatment for our hair. That’s why we proceeded to have my dilemma vanish away by trying out NOVUHAIR products.
First up is the massage of the hair and scalp. It was so relaxing and satisfying. The technique they used was a testament to their commitment to provide customers and partners enjoyable and satisfying hair treatment.
It was a gentle and revitalizing massage that I felt like I really wanted to sleep. The massage and the NOVUHAIR Topical Scalp Solution’s refreshing and cool effect really gave my scalp a much needed pamper.
Afterwards, I had a very good hair wash using NOVUHAIR Herbal Shampoo and Conditioner. It was very fragrant and well-scented. It had a sweet taste and luxurious feel to it!

Moreover, I had my hairstyling done by one of their senior hairstylists, Mr. Jun. He was a man of his craft, intricate and critical of what he does best. The way he handles and manipulates every strand of my hair really proves his credibility and expertise in his field.

I thought that after this is well and done, I would look like much younger and have a more millenial-like look haha. This is his haircut technique to cut layers.
Thank you Sir Jun for my haircut

Everything from my scalp up to the cutting and styling of my hair was topnotch. The adventure I underwent was much treasurable and quite an accomplishment.  It was also a delightful treat to use NOVUHAIR products. Being natural is indeed much better and healthier for our needs.
Choose Natural, Choose Novuhair.
